We're a growing movement of people across the Lower Mainland who agree that the Fraser Valley needs passenger rail service NOW!
In 1910, with 18,000 people living in the Fraser Valley, we had Interurban passenger rail service all the way from Chilliwack to Vancouver. In the 1950s, the Interurban service was shut down because people were driving cars instead. Today, the Fraser Valley has close to a million people, and traffic headaches you'd never dream about in the 1950s. Instead of being stuck in traffic, why not ride the train?
Re-establishing Interurban passenger rail service from Chilliwack to at least as far as Scott Rd. Skytrain in Surrey station is a no-brainer, because:
1) the track is still intact, and is under-used by freight
2) only minor upgrades are necessary for passenger rail service
3) the government already owns the Interurban right-of-way as well as the rights to run passenger rail on this track
An initial service could be implemented in less than 2 years. All we need is the political will.
While the movement advocating Rail for the Valley has advanced greatly the last few months, some of our governing politicians still don't seem to get it. They say it isn't viable "at this time." Maybe in 20 years, they say. Of course, they said that 20 years ago....
The Fraser Valley needs a passenger rail spine today, for us to move toward an efficient, well-used public transit system tomorrow. By following this vision and beginning to invest in passenger rail as an alternative transportation option for people in the Fraser Valley, we can start to collectively reduce our carbon footprint right here in the Valley. Having the option of riding the train encourages land use that is not entirely centred around the car. We decide today what the Fraser Valley will look like 50 years or 100 years from now. By supporting and getting involved in the Rail For The Valley Campaign, you are contributing to the strong public advocacy of an idea that is LONG overdue.
